First I will talk about sniping as it is my favorite and is also what I learned first when I started playing DF2.  I believe that all new players in DF2 should have a go at sniping first as it will teach you the basics of the game and let you see just how the assaulters move.  There is a great deal to learn before you just jump in and start using a saw and/or the M4 combo riffles.  Some may disagree, but I feel that I am more of a force with a saw in my hands now that I have almost mastered the art of sniping.  I say almost mastered because one can never master any skill playing DF2.  There are always better ways to do something and you will always learn more after playing for a good amount of time.  I learn more and more every time I play DF2.  That is one thing that I have learned “never, never, ever think that you have mastered the game”.  You will be a much better player if you go by this rule.

«Sniping»

First of all I will explain the types of snipers that play in DF2.  There are many types of snipers that play DF2, but a good friend and fellow INFINITE member puts it the best way that I have seen.  5225 says this: “The way I see it, there are three different kind of snipers that play the game. The first is the ‘arcade’-playing sniper. This person is out to get as many kills possible in the smallest amount of time. Because of this, he will often be killed within five minutes of finding a spot, and probably even less time than that. The second kind of sniper is the 'realistic' sniper. This guy is the one that will spend the first five to ten minutes of the match just finding either his favorite location or a great new one. He is out to not die once the entire match and is often times a good anti-sniper, because he is constantly watching his surroundings and the hills around him, thus killing off enemy snipers. This type of sniper may get only one kill for every ten minutes he plays, but in time will have an awesome kill ratio to show for it. The third type of sniper (combat sniper) is a combination of the first two and also the most common type of person to play the game. This person will take more risks in order to get more kills, therefore may die four to eight times during a match but will also get a lot of kills. This is probably the most effective type of sniper on DF2. By taking risks, I mean that he may only be 300 to 600 meters away from his target, thus being more easily found. He may also find a position not a well concealed and reveal himself more than the 'realistic' sniper ever would. Whichever kind of sniper you happen to be, happy killing.”

I personally am generally either the first or third of the above, but most likely will play the third.  I usually don’t wonder to far from my own respawn so most of the time I am about 600m to 1000m away from the action or the other teams respawn.  As you know some of the maps are very spread out and large so it is not beyond the norm for your teams respawn to be about 900m away from the other teams respawn.  I generally stay within about 300m to 400m of my respawn area.  I do this so if I happen to get killed I don’t have to spend a lot of time finding a new spot and I also don’t have to spend a lot of time getting to my first spot.  I also can help out more if the other team tries a base rape.  By staying closer to my respawn I am in position to help defend the respawn area.  Some snipers spend a lot of time finding a spot or their favorite spot which I think can be a waste of time.  I will be the first to admit that by following the tactics that I follow that I do get killed more often, but I get a lot more kills.  I usually try to keep my kill/death ratio around 10/1.  If I achieve this ratio I am happy.  You may feel differently then I do, but that is just your way of sniping and there is nothing wrong with that.  Do what you think is best and feel comfortable doing.  You will be a much better sniper and player by doing what you like.

«Always Be Where They Don't Expect You»

Location is the most important thing that an effective sniper must learn.  I might seem logical to run straight to the nearest tallest hill or maintain that you can find, but your silhouette will make you stick out like a sore thumb.   That will be the first thing that the other players and snipers will look.  A good sniper must find a good hiding spot or preferably hiding spots.  I say hiding spots simply because you can never have to many good hiding spots.  I have read many different hiding techniques and most say different things.  Some believe that a spot where a sniper can see half of the play field is good enough and others say that in order to be efficient the sniper must see the entire playing field.  Both work good depending on the situation and the map that you are playing on at the time.  I prefer to have a full view of the field, but it is not always that simple.  On some maps it is just impossible to have a full view and stay hidden at the same time.  I prefer to lie on the sides of hills or on the front of them.  When you find the spot that you are going to snipe from be sure to recon the area the first.  Always do this with your binoculars and not your scope.  Get out your binoculars and check the surrounding area for enemy snipers and players.  Watch for tracers and listen for gun blasts.  Take these players out first, as they are an immediate threat to you and your mission.  After you do these things then you can concentrate on the playing field and your mission.

«Anti-Snipers»

Most of the time you will make some enemies on the other team and they will come looking for you.  Usually anti-snipers are other snipers that are in the game, but there are always those that prefer to do it close up.  They usually prefer to do it with a knife or with grenades.  That is why I feel that all snipers should be skilled in CQC (close quarters combat) to help fight these players off.  Many say that a sniper should only stay in one spot for at the most 3 to 4 shots.  I disagree with this because you could spend more time moving then actually playing.  It is easy to wear out a spot (favorite spot), but if they don’t know that you are there then why move.  There are many beliefs to help combat this problem.  Some say to lay a satchel down and then lay on top of it, but this is a good way to get killed inadvertently.  Others say to put claymores behind you about 10 to 20m one to the left and another to the right.  I personally don’t do either.  I prefer to carry extra ammo with me so I don’t always have the room for either clays or satchels.  My suggestion is to just experiment with all of them and see what works for you.  It is always smart to check the messages, behind you and around you often.  You can do this by using the F6 key.  A good sniper must learn and master the use of the F6 key, as it could be the difference between living and dying.  It will allow you to check behind and around you without needing to move around.  Moving around to much attracts attention to you and should be avoided at all times.  I am not saying to not move at all, but avoid swinging all the around to see behind you.  If you have been spotted and know that you have been spotted then quickly find a new spot.  I usually move to a spot where I can see the spot that I just left.  I wait for the would be killer to find his way to where I just came from.  They will usually stand there for a moment making sure that was the place where you were.  When they do this I give them what they don’t want a bullet from my .50 cal.  This really messes with their minds, because they are not expecting you to be watching them waiting for them to stop.

«Moving Targets»

One of the hardest things to get the hang of is shooting running targets.  They just never stand still long enough to shoot them.  There are many things to take into consideration when shooting at a moving target: lag, wind, direction from target, direction the target is moving, and speed at which the is moving.  All of which must be accounted for lag and wind being the more difficult to over come.  You must lead the target that you are shooting at and to lead them you must shoot in front the target, but how far depends on the things mentioned above.  I would recommend that when shooting at moving targets to set your scope to about 100m under the actual range.  I find that if I do this it is easier to not over shoot the target.  I have found that if I am shooting at a moving target 500m away and my scope range is set to 500m I will often over shoot the target.  I usually set it at like 400m (if the target is at 500m) and aim right about parallel with the targets head when I do this I have a greater chance of hitting the target.  This does change with the distance of the target from your hide position.  I find that it is more useful to use this tactic when I am around 400m to 700m away from the target.  At greater distances it is more of a luck thing instead of a skill thing, but with enough practice it is possible to hit moving targets often from over 700m away.  Sometimes this works and other times it does not work.  Just try them both and see what works best for you.  About the only thing that I can say is practice, practice, and practice.  Shooting at moving targets is not really something that can be taught it is something that only you can learn with experience and practice.  Remember never shoot to many times at a moving target or the next .50 cal boom that you hear will be the aimed at you.

«Wind»

Wind is something that must be taken in to account when sniping.  Other players are always asking how to shoot when there is wind.  First you must determine the speed of the wind and from which direction it is coming.  You will have to aim to one side or the other of the target.  Which side and how far to the side will depend on the things mentioned above.  It is just something that will come with experience and trial and error.  It took me sometime to finally get the hang of it.  What I would recommend is hosting your own game or go into a server that has no other players in it and shoot at trees, shrubs, or whatever else you can find (there must be wind in the game to practice).

«Basic Tips»

  • If you don’t have a set of good headphones get a set.  When using headphones it is easier to hear players come up behind you and hear gunfire.  If you are going to be an ant sniper headphones will help you to pinpoint the exact location of other snipers in the game.  You pay a lot more attention to sounds with them.

  • The gillie suit is a very useful tool for any sniper.  It will help you to blend in on some terrains.  Some terrains it is completely useless, but most of the time it is.  I almost always have one on.  It can either help you to blend in or it can make you stick out worse.  Just depends on where you are going to hide most of the time.  In grass it can make your silhouette worse, but in an area with dirt it can help out tremendously.  Just experiment with it and with out it and decided for yourself, which works best.  The funniest thing I have heard (which is a lot) is that it does not make you invisible so many don’t use it.  If it made a person invisible then you would not need to hide at all.

  • F6 key, F6 key, F6 key.  I cannot say this enough times.  Use it master it become one with it.

  • Also if you are using an old mouse with a ball try and find a mouse with a laser sensor.  It is more precise in its movements which means it is easier when trying to sight in a target.  I also recommend that it have a wheel on it also.
